I Miss Sushi

this is how sushi is supposed to look. Isn't it beautiful?

This town seems to have never heard of sushi. No sushi bars.  No sushi served in restaurants.  No sushi anything.

Last night I was craving sushi.  So what was a girl to do?

Head to the grocery store of course to get all the ingredients to make it herself.  Salmon. Check.  Cream cheese.  Check.  Sushi rice.  I don't see the sushi rice.  Where, oh were is that darn sushi rice??  After doing a few laps and weaving in and out of isles trying to hunt down an employee, I finally found a  scowling guy who was stocking shelves. I was probably the millionth person coming up to him asking where a product was.  So I stroll right up and ask him, "excuse me, where is your sushi rice?"  He turns around slowly as if I'm interrupting something that is of extreme importance.

"I'm sorry miss, we don't have any of that stuff"

He goes back to stocking his shelf , and internally I was screaming What the F&$#%!?  You mean to tell me you don't even have an international food isle?  What did I get myself into when I moved to this town?  Oh yeah...the lake.  Just keep thinking about how pretty the lake is in the summer. Pretty lake.  Boating on lake.  Swimming in lake.  Parties.  But there's still no godforsaken sushi.

At this point, I was still determined to make my sushi. I had a few nori seaweed sheets at home,  so I decided to fudge it and bought minute rice, along with the rest of the other ingredients.

Lo and behold, my ghetto sushi actually tasted decent.  It almost passed for normal sushi, although I still can't master the way these wonderful Asians master the sushi roll.  Mine was way overstuffed, with rice falling out of the sides and sort of looked like a limp pickle.

Oh well, you win some, you loose some.

  7. Come on down to the Binghamton area and I'll take you out for sushi!

And, should you want a fake sushi, a friend gave me a "recipe" for sushi pickles. You need sliced deli ham, Claussen dill pickles (he swears these are the ones to use) and cream cheese. Spread a slice of ham with cream cheese; wrap around pickle; slice at 1 inch increments. YUM!

  8. Ms Bibi,

I admit I didn't like it at first. I hated it, in fact. My friend took me out and I thought it was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted. Then I went out and had it again (I think it was just the cream cheese roll-which is my fave) and dipped it in the soy sauce..after that I was hooked. You're right though. It is an acquired taste I think!
