When the Rep focused on local issues, they won. When they focused on grandiose rhetoric that their constitutents didn't give 2 squats about, they generally lost.
P.S. In addition to the two governors races, you're also forgetting the results of NY's 23rd House seat. The GOP had held it for well over 150 years yet lost it by 5+% last night.
It really has nothing to do w/ Obama.
